Funding Announcement

April 27, 2020

The NB Environmental Trust Fund announced funding support for projects in 2020-21. The renewed investment is for work in watershed restoration and education. The funding prioritizes restoration of floodplain forest, re-establishing the critical habitat these ecosystems provide to sensitive and at-risk species, and increasing the ability of the Nashwaak’s floodplains to modulate river flows. Monitoring projects, including water quality monitoring and assessing culverts for fish passage, are included in the provincial announcement. The  monitoring program enables us to prioritize future restoration and management efforts.

At times like these we appreciate the early funding announcement supporting our work in the watershed. The NB Environmental Trust Fund generously contributed a total $100,000 to fund three projects in our watershed. The total of Environmental Trust Funded projects in 2020-2021 is $9,058,000.

Annual Meeting 2019

November 21, 2019

On November 13th, 2019, we held our annual meeting, and overall it was a huge success.  We had 43 stakeholders from the community in attendance, including members from our Board of Directors. This year we have had support from 12 different funding sources spread across 18 projects. Dr. Peter Toner delivered the President’s report and discussed the Provincial Water Strategy, Sisson Mine, NWAI Tree Nursery and Strategic Plan. He stated that increasing membership is a top priority of the association as we have never had over 100 active members.

Dr. Janice Lawrence presenting on cyanobacteria

Dr. Janice Lawrence, from UNB Fredericton spoke on the topic of Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae). Dr. Lawrence’s presentation described the genetic approach her lab uses for assessing the health of NB’s lakes and rivers. Janice described the difference between green algae and cyanobacteria. She provided background on cyanobacteria and presented the microcystin and anatoxin data from Nashwaak and Wolastoq rivers. Cyanobacteria is a phylum of photosynthetic bacteria found in diverse habitats. Cyanobacteria thrive in warm waters with excess nutrients, particularly phosphorus.

As special guests to help us to promote our duck box giveaway for landowners, we had a male and female wood duck visit from Nashwaak Valley Farms.

We would like to thank the NWAI Board of Directors for contributing their time and effort this past year, and we would like to thank community members who continuously support us through memberships and volunteering.  All members were in favour of approving the 2019-2020 board of directors:
Peter Toner, President
Stephanie Merrill, Vice-President
Josh Noseworthy, Treasurer
Jean-Guy Leaman
Melony McCarthy
William Miller
Brian Perry
Julia Carpenter
Mike Chamberlain (new director)

Marieka Chaplin, Executive Director, presented the Association’s financial report

We would also like to thank our funders; the NB Environmental Trust Fund, the Atlantic Salmon Conservation Foundation, the NB Wildlife Trust Fund, Eco-Action Community Funding Program, LUSH Cosmetics, Department of Fisheries and Oceans, SEED, Canada Summer Jobs and Tree Canada We would like to thank all of our in-kind partners as well.

Again, we would like to thank those that continually support us, and we look forward to seeing everyone next year at our 2020 Annual General Meeting!

Rain Garden Workshop

July 29, 2019

Do you know what a rain garden is?

A rain garden is designed to collect rain runoff, slow its movement and allow the rain water to filter back into the ground. Rain gardens have various benefits to the environment, for instance, they help prevent erosion by collecting fast moving rain water; and by creating habitat for pollinating insects, birds and other small animals. We used 16 native wetland species such as swamp milkweed, sensitive fern, lungwort and Canada Lily.

We partnered with The Ville to build a rain garden and it was a success thank you to the volunteers that came out from Tidal Impact and the Marysville community. We encourage you to try building your own Rain Garden but please remember to not harvest native plant species to save money. For more information or if you have questions on how to build a rain garden feel free to contact us.
